When you are shopping, remember to consider the product lifecycle! (How the product is made and where it will end up). You can easily do this when comparing products at the store (or online):
- Look for phrases like “sustainably sourced”, “biodegradable,” “recyclable,” or “made from recycled materials.”
- Look at where the product is made or grown and choose a local alternative when it’s available.
- Avoid excessive packaging or non-recyclable materials.
- Look for labels and certifications like “Energy Star”.
- Avoid single use items, especially if they are not biodegradable.
Avoid toxic chemicals! They affect the water we drink and the air we breathe, and they can directly impact your health! They might be found in beauty products, cleaners and other common items around your home. Consider using white vinegar to clean and disinfect surfaces like bathtubs or items like sports equipment (but first check if it’s safe – natural stone and some other materials can get damaged). You might be surprised, but once the vinegar dries, the smell is gone, and a big jug of vinegar is inexpensive.
